THE CLAIMS FILE
                The Policyholders' Track Record

The policyholder's track record (number of accidents and claims) is one of the elements that allow insurers to assess risk and set premiums.

The Fichier central des sinistres automobiles (FCSA), a claims tracking database, was established for this very purpose. Run by the GAA on behalf of the Autorité des marchés financiers, this database contains information on all automobile insurance claims made during the previous six years. Automobile insurers use the database solely for the purpose of establishing premiums.

Insurers who consult the database through the GAA must abide by the rules prescribed by the Act respecting Access to documents held by public bodies and the Protection of personal information. Insurers must therefore obtain policyholders' permission before consulting their FCSA record.
